9.   Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The reading assignments and the problem sets as well as the practice exams greatly helped in preparing for the exams.
Understanding the ins and outs of trade between two countries and how it affects the world market.
Learning the basics of Economics once again, i believe was very important. Many times i do forget terminology, so it was nice to revisit Ricardian model.
Materials are pretty good. Easy to understand even if you are no native students.
power points explanation
When Professor Karacaovali would explain further why the models were a certain way. It was helpful for our own sense, so we could understand more than just the surface of the material. I wish it were possible to do more problem sets. Possibly at least two problem sets per topic? If it were possible it would be helpful to have an on-line program to do the homework, so we could get immediate feedback, and do more practice problems. The midterm review sheet and the problem sets were very valuable and helpful though.
Learning about trade aspects between countries, the power point slides
Professor Baybars was very thorough in his lectures and went a pace that everyone could follow.
example problems and lotsa of extra resources
The lectures were useful and easy to understand.
Clear examples and what was covered in class was put in exams
The lectures, course content and class materials.
I enjoyed learning about contemporary issues in trade
All models covered Thank you Baybars!!!
Baybars is very clear in his explanations of the various topics presented in class. He doesn't assume that his students should already know the subject matter from reading the book.
Probably my favorite class this semester due to the practical application of subject matter.
Chapters on tariffs and barriers were valuable especially considering APEC was held during this semester. Connecting the models with current real events helps a lot. Reading assignments helped.
The graphs were very helpful in illustrating before and after effects of things such as tariffs, tax, etc. The practice midterms covered a majority of the topics aforementioned and familiarized me with the exam format, such that I was comfortable taking it. The student presentations brought new material, topics, and ideas without being too distracting. It shone light into other areas of economics in which we may be able to apply what we learned in Econ 460.
This class was thorough on all its theories. I like how the course ramped up in difficulty.
reading assignments
The effects of international trade in the world economy and how it relates to current day politics as well as trade policies that have been passed or are about to be passed.

10.   Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
N/A
all were beneficial to the application of the subject
Nothing
book
The reading assignments weren't terrible but seemed a bit unnecessary. I would have like to see more real life examples brought up during class whether its through a video or a article.
some lengthy lectures
This is hard, but I wish we had covered more material. I understand that not all of the class is on the same level, but it was a little slow for me.
Class general interest
None.
Did not enjoy the extensive math and technical application of theory
NONE Thank you Baybars!!!
Probably the reading assignments. I don't feel like I gained much from doing those assignments.
None.
The reading assignments were a toss up between good and bad. Good because they related to the topics we covered in class and introduced real life situations in which we could apply what we learned in Econ 460. Bad because they were not included in exams. It would be nice to see some questions related to the reading assignments on the exam so we are constantly reminded that we need to apply what we learned into the real world. Also, including some questions from the readings on the exam would make students take the reading assignments more seriously...
problem sets were too hard i wasnt prepared well enough for them
nothing

26.   Other comments:
Prof. Karacaovali is very enthusiastic in teaching, although the material is challenging his demeanor never falters and always comes to class with a smile.
This class, i must admit was a little challenging for me. I believe Baybars should write more legibly on the board, and notes would be more understandable. Otherwise the course became more and more interesting. Im glad i took this course, it really is something we should all learn since we go through trade and globalization everyday. Dont worry Professor, even though our class doesnt speak much we still appreciate your teaching methods. Most of the econ classes I have taken have been like this. I found that after your first evaluation, you were able to make the class participate more. Thanks professor for an interesting semester.
good teacher, great knowledge
Professor Karacaovali is a great professor and addition to UH Manoa. Very happy to have taken a course from him.
This class gives all the relevant information without too much extra too confuse us. I think the size of the classroom was too large which makes it feel more like a lecture. If the classroom size was smaller, I think it would make the class more interactive but the professor does well in trying to engage the class in discussion.
Baybars is an excellent professor. UH Economics Department needs to find more Baybars to teach at our Economics Department. Perhaps UH can develop an International Economics curriculum for students to graduate, just like at other prestigious schools.
Most of the students were not at a high enough level to begin to understand the material which prevented some students from enjoying the class. It was fun. It was easy. I sympathize with the professor because he wanted us to learn and appreciate the material but students enrolled in the course just for a passing grade which is a real shame, but I did sincerely enjoy ALL material covered and was a bit disappointed that other students didn't care, I look forward to your other classes here at UH.
I would take a class from this instructor again
Powerpoints very very helpful. Always wanted class participation but really shouldn't take it personally if no one wants to speak up. Class presentations and reading assignments were a good way of helping us broaden our view of the subject.
Very fair professors, punctual and eager to teach. It is really encouraging as a student to have a professor that cares. Makes you feel comfortable to ask questions and participate. Lectures can get a bit dry sometimes but lack of student interest does that to you. Constantly relating models to real examples would help connect the material. Material is understandable and examples are too but being able to compare the bigger picture is helpful for visualization.
Lectures sometimes felt like they were draggong on and on, but maybe this is because we only meet two days a week so the material has to be "crammed" Idk, but having to jot down notes from the beginning to the end of class hurts my brain. Maybe we could have breaks or something...or you can switch to just verbal teaching or switching to powerpoint.
The class was great. The reading assignments were a great complement to the topics covered. The student presentations were also a good change up. Trade theory is fairly bland, but the class seemed to go by pretty fast for what it was. He asks some questions that are too easy, so most people don't like to answer those.
i wasnt well enough informed on due dates for assignments so i ended up not being able to turn in assignments that i wanted to. extra credit presentation i also had no knowledge of how was supposed to do it wether sign up for a day or if we were assigned a day i cant find sign up sheet anywhere also i think my midterm was graded far too harshly and his office hours are always when i have class
Baybars is a very good professor that comes to class prepared and on time. He is very knowledgable about international trade and welfare and is able to teach it in a clear way. He is always willing to help a student with any questions. I think the class would benefit if he slowed down when writing notes on the board. Overall, I would recommend other Econ majors to take his classes and believe he is a valuable asset to the Econ department
