8.   Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Handouts were helpful when trying to understand the concepts of what we were learning, especially when we had to do homework. I-clickers and going over problems from the homework sets were also helpful and added to the easiness of the class. He tries his best in explaining everything and what we are learning - especially the difficult parts and is always letting us know help is always available.
I think Baybars Karacaovali does a really good job setting up a basic foundation of understanding statistics so that as he progresses through the course nothing is too complicated or confusing.
going over the problem sets during class
learning the basics of stats.
Learning about conditional probability was really eye opening to me on what the statistics actually mean.
INTERVALS AND RELATING THEM TO HOW INSURANCE COMPANYS PROPOSE THEIR PLANS
The lecture notes were very very helpful in understanding the material. Having problem sets helped me to keep up with studying for the class and helped me practice for exams. Using the iclicker also helped me to participate in class.
Presentation of material in realistic ways or examples.
The practice examples that relate to real life experiences.
The interesting real life examples. Before without applying examples, especially in math and stats, it was boring but this class was much more interesting and enjoyable.
He prepares the material very well.
Hypothesis testing
The problem sets helped I understand the material. Baybars was always willing to answer questions and help whenever needed.
Problem set was helpful for the quiz and test
Learning how to do statistical analysis that will be important later in my science career.
I liked that he goes over the homework problems.
he applied real-life situations to help understanding
Going over the homework as a class was really helpful, and I really enjoyed the videos that the professor showed the class to demonstrate applications of statistics in real life.
I enjoyed the i clickers because it allowed us to actively participate while at the same time earn some credit. I also liked that the homework was graded for completion, so that if you didn't understand a concept, you didn't get penalized for not getting the correct answer even if you tried.
Understanding the concepts instead of just using the formula to solve a problem Homework Class Exercise
I like the problem sets. They help me understand the chapter better.
He gives handouts which kept us awake and focused on the lectures. Plus I like how attendance is mandatory.
The homework because It allowed us to practice doing the problems and understanding it better.
learning to gather necessary data needed to answer specific questions.
Probability
Learning statistic is fun
completing and being done with the course for good was probably the most valuable part.
We had many opportunities to gain points in this course (through completing problem sets, quizzes, homework, and iclicker questions), which definitely helped expose us to relevant examples as well as gave us the chance to get a better grade.
The amount of problems given for practice were very helpful in understanding concepts better.
Everything, I learned a lot from this class about statistics.
The formulas helped a lot.
The worksheets, the I clicker questions, the videos
I really liked the handouts with the new additional problems to work on.
Baybars made everything extremely clear and repeated examples over and over to make sure we fully understood the lesson. He provided all the equations we needed to know.
In the begining the subject matter actually pertained to real world expereinces. But as the course went on it became amusing.
Problem sets, and answers to check my work
Topics in the first half seemed most useful to a TIM major
finding the chances of the three doors
Showing multiple examples of how statistics is applied to the real world was interesting and helpful.
Problem sets and problem set reviews
I think ALL OF THEM ARE VERY VALUABLE. It helps me to understand models in accounting academic paper.I really appreciated Prof. Baybars's hard work. He is very nice professor.
all of it
Coming from a research background, learning many of these statistical calculations may be useful/applicable in the future. I particularly enjoyed that we were given streamlined handouts with formulas and clear-cut exercises. They will be good reference materials if I ever need to use any of these statistical methods!
The lectures
The handouts helped a lot when studying for exams
The principles of stats and how to apply the equations
I enjoyed the real life examples and the ones that affected the lives of average citizens. Stats is super useful and can be extremely complicated but Baybars was able to teach simply and clearfuly without confusing people to much.
The practice examples during class and the i-clicker questions were helpful because it allowed me to think about and use what was taught. The homework problems were also very helpful because it allowed me to think on my own and practice the concepts. Also the professor explaining and going over the homework problems were helpful because it helped me understand the mistakes I made.
Learning about probability would most likely be the only thing that I could actually apply in the real world. I also like that there was iclicker questions as part of the grade since students that attend class should be recognized for it.
I really like how the professor demonstrate how to do a problem with the formula with an example.
The tools that statistics provides.
I believe the home works were very helpful
The first part of the course was valuable because it is information that I can take on to other courses.
The worksheets and iclicker questions really helped me understand the content.
Lectures were easy to understand and the homework helps as practice. The quizzes helped me to be prepared to what would be expected on the mid term and final.
Getting points for at least trying the problems sets was a great benefit for me. A lot of review throughout the lecture sessions. Watching interesting videos as fun activities.
The problem sets
Baybars is very knowledgeable, and gives a bunch of examples in his classes. It is difficult to make statistics interesting, but he does a good job.
In an economics, everything is based on stats, so this class definitely is a good step into economics.
I really enjoyed the latter half of the course (after the mid term exam), especially the ones focusing on hypothesis testing.
Going over the different problems.
Homework
Absolutely nothing.
The homework were really helpful in understanding the concepts.
Hypothesis testing is very applicable to Biology.
Learning how statistics work was really valuable. I knew nothing of statistics before this course. I believe knowing how to work a z-table or t-table is important.
The handouts and practice problems.
Practicing a lot with many resources such as problem setes.
Lectures were good. Quiz's were reasonable and to the point.
I think that it was a good survey course to get a foundational overview of a lot of other concepts.
Formulas and tables
I really liked the class format. Enough resources were available to help us understand the material and pass the class.
I felt that the videos he showed were exciting and made the material more interesting
The handout materials.
i did not find this class valuable
The typed handouts

9.   Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
N/A
The second half of the class moves a little too quickly and I wish the slides were posted on Laulima so that they could be reviewed after class.
having quiz questions come straight from the homework, they should be completely new questions
nothing
none
ALL THE DIFFICULT VARIABLES
Cannot think of anything
The notes were good just had a hard time look back at it because it has to much words.
I hope he could make the material more intriguing. Sometimes I feel the material is important but it's a bit dry.
learning about histograms and pie charts. That should be assumed knowledge for this course, in my opinion.
I wish there was an online course that went with this that offered online support an an ebook. The more problems available to practice the better.
The test is way too harder than quiz
He can be a little long winded
The video clips did not relate to me
The quizzes could have been more useful if they did not come directly from the homework.
I can't think of any.
Slow pace of the class
I think book should be a requirement. Although I rather not spend money on a 200 dollars book when it's not required, not having a book there with me really sucks. or...find a cheaper book
It can be confusing sometimes. He seems to explain solutions/equations in a rush way. It would be better if he teaches us shortcuts.
None, I found all aspects helpful in understanding the content.
The i clickers
The content and the final should be multiple choice since the content is so hard.
none
Nothing!
Understanding certain concepts.
Nothing. Majority of the information given was pertinent.

the subject matter was really confusing.
quizzes
Second half of the course was more complex and complicated than what I will likely ever use in my life
the more recent material since it is so dense and difficult to understant
the one-question quizzes :P
None.
none
The initial topics such as Graphical descriptions of data were more or less a review course of some mathematics many have learned previously. However, I really do see the importance of "refreshing" students' memories as those initial topics provided the gentle transition into more and more difficult concepts as the course progressed. Everything in this course was very well-designed so that new concepts continually built upon each other.
The exams
Super complicated formulas.
The book. I bought the book but found it the least valuable to the course. The problems on the homework sets done along with the lecture notes were more useful than the book because the professor explained the concepts well.
Nothing really
I would say, the class is grading is too heavy on exams.
The way the professor taught the course was overly complicated and hard to follow. I feel that given the course material, it could be taught in a much simpler fashion.
The quizzes straight from the homework may not seemed very helpful. They were too easy
The second part of the material that was taught.
However I felt whatever was on the handouts that we did in class the questions on the problem sets were much harder to do and understand.
None
The unclear lectures
Learning statistics in a lecture hall with more than 100 people sucks. I wish the course was more individualized through use of the internet.
The iClicker2 was by far the least valuable.
The beginning, while valuable, I felt was knowledge that shouldn't have to be taught; it was very redundant.
Nothing.
NA
-iClickers, total waste of money. -The size of the class. -The teachers expectations and attitude towards people not understanding content.
I found everything valuable on this course.
The beginning with the lengthy introduction.
I'm not sure

None
The class size. This topic might be better taught in a more intimate setting of 30 or 40 instead of 100. The topics are hard to grasp and in such a large class no one will ask questions.
I wish that sometimes the intuition behind the equations was explained more. I also would have really liked it if there had been more outside materials to cover the course work. I work at multiple jobs and really don't have time for office hours. When I'm lost in a class I try to read the text book and solve problems on my own, but unfortunately that was unavailable for the most part in this class. I think when it comes to learning math, the students who want to practice more should be able to.

very monotone professor, strong accent which made understanding/paying attention extremely difficult
Sometimes went quick through the slides which was hard to keep up with

19.   Other comments:
He's a pretty cool professor, when some parts get difficult, he really tries his best to help you understand and always assures us help is always available. Probably one of my LESS-stressful classes this year because he makes it easy and convenient for us for help, in understanding and comprehending the material and is always asking if we have any questions or if we are all on the same page.
Baybars Karacaovali is very approachable and a really good teacher.
Good class.
Enjoyed the class even though I am not an ECON major. I learned a lot from this class. I liked the format of the class, how we had to turn in problem set homework problems, etc. and I thought it was good that we didn't have to buy a textbook. Great class and I would definitely recommend it!
Great class
Enjoyable class
I am glad that I take this class. Professor Karacaovali does a good job! :)

I know this is not very constructive criticism, but I really liked the layout of the course! You guys did a great job of explaining the material and made it easy to understand, thank you :)
Regression and correlation are two of the most used tests in research. I was hoping to learn them.
Great and humble professor!
The content required to learn in this class is really challenging and he doesn't spend enough time on each problem set. I wish he went slower and explained things more clearly. Other then that he is a very nice professor and if you had a lot of extra time would definitely help you, but seeing that we don't all have lots of extra time to meet with him outside of class his class was too hard.
none
Great teacher. He shouldn't change anything.
The TA was good and she graded things very promptly. I really appreciated the fact that grades were always up to date. She emailed right away when I tried to contact her.
Wouldn't recommend teaching a mathematics course in a large setting like in PHYSCI217
Made difficult concepts fairly painless to get through.
I would recommend the course and professor to other students.
The overall class was great. But it would be perfect if we can have a small class and be able to have more participation. I don't like Iclick.
He is a great teacher but the subject is not interesting
Professor Karacaovali's class was a very well-designed class overall. I could tell that he really tried to make the course "student-friendly" in whatever way he could - something that many professors lose sight of. I particularly liked the ordering and selection of topics in this course, as they continually built upon each other week after week. Having streamlined handouts that covered everything we needed to know (no topics outside of what was covered on handouts was tested) was really helpful and made the entire course much more enjoyable.
Some lessons are difficult to understand and explanations can be unclear. Test questions and grading are fair
Professor Karacaovali is a great teacher and is able to break down the concepts into simpler terms. I like how he does problems during class and involves the class with the i-clicker. The i-clicker questions are very helpful because it allows the students to think. I also like how he tries to incorporate videos and outside examples to show how statistics is important and relevant to everyday life, which made the class more interesting and made me interested in stats. One comment would be that he would smile more. I felt overall Professor Karacaovali did a great job teaching!!!
Excellent teacher, just wish exam wasn't so heavy in the grade.

I'm excited to take International Trade with Baybars in the fall in a much smaller class setting.
I think on the test, if you got the correct answer, it doesn't matter whether you showed your work or not. Everything can be done on the calculator or a phone.
Would definitely take a higher level course from this professor.
Sad that I enrolled in this course. Was very excited to learn about statistics. Not a good class size, class environment, or teacher. Writes on the board and then moves on. No effort put in by the teacher to help students understand in a fun and knowledgable learning environment.
None.
It's hard to understand Baybars and the TA sometimes. But I could tell he was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Statistics. I thought his homeowkr, quizzes, and grading was fair. Although I do not feel like I know a lot about stats, I knew enough to do well in this class. That could be a pro and a con. Overall I enjoyed this class, although that may be because I am doing well.
I would have liked to have a complimentary online homework or practice program with this course. It is difficult with all the different equations to know if you are doing something correctly.
I think that Professor Karacaovali is a fantastic teacher who cares about his students. Unfortunately I think this class suffered by the terrible auditorium it was held in. The class felt impersonal, and it was difficult to ask questions. I think statistics is a difficult subject and it's a mistake to have such a large class for a subject like this where students really can't ask questions. Sometimes it was hard to hear the professor. I'm disappointing because I was looking forward to learning about statistics and I don't feel like i accomplished that. Again I want to repeat though, I really like Baybars Karacaovali, I think this class was just victim to having too many students and being held in one of the worst classrooms I have ever been in at UH.
Thank you for the semester.
The class was hard to follow since it was such a huge class. Whenever I didn't understand I couldn't stop and ask questions cause I felt like I was holding up the class. The notes were easy to follow, yet it was not very helpful in class. So towards the end of the semester I started to fall behind. Overall, the class could have been easier, except it wasn't because I couldn't really understand the content of some of the classes because it did not make anysense.
This is all highly subjective, considering that Baybars and the TA are ESL, so this survey can yield many different outcomes based on perception in regard to speaking clearly, understanding the material, etc.
