About Us

The Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) is a coordinating unit of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM), the flagship campus of the University of Hawaiʻi (UH), which fosters the study of Japan across academic disciplines. It is housed among other area studies units within the School of Pacific & Asian Studies (SPAS), which focuses on the international, intercultural, and multidisciplinary education of UH Students.

Graduate Certificate in Japanese Studies

The Asian Studies Graduate Program offers a Certificate in Japanese Studies that are open to UHM students of graduate standing who meet the admission requirements. To obtain the certificate, students must complete 15 credits of coursework on Japan, with at least 9 credits at 600 level or above (including ASAN 600J Scope and Methods of Japanese Studies, ASAN 750J Research Colloquium in Japanese Studies), and demonstrate at least second year level Japanese language.
