Fill out the ELI Placement Form

For the safety of everyone and due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including visa delays, flight restrictions and required quarantines, the ELI will not require new ELI students to take our in-person placement test during the academic year ’20-’21 (Fall 20 & Spring 21).

Rather, we will place new, incoming ELI students into our classes based on all the relevant data we have available that indicates English language ability, such as students’ TOEFL or IELTS scores, as well as transcripts, SAT scores, transfer credits, and GPA, if available. This placement policy will apply to all students whether they will be physically present on campus in Fall ’20 and Spring ’21 or whether they will remain abroad taking all classes fully online. Students who do not have TOEFL or IELTS scores (i.e., TOEFL was waived), will be placed based on any other data available plus an oral interview with one of the ELI administrators. Students are also welcome to submit any single-author, academic writing samples that include citations of reliable, academic sources to help us determine writing placements. Please note that this is a temporary policy in place during the COVID 19 pandemic.

If you have an ELI registration hold, please fill out the ELI Placement Form (not yet open for Spring 2021). Once we process your placement form, we will contact you with information about your placement and how to remove your ELI hold.

In addition, we will be offering one optional ELI in-person test. Spring 2021’s test is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 7th. Of course, we will be following the safety guidelines provided by UHM related to COVID 19 (the room will be sanitized, masks required for all students and staff, and social distance required, etc.). This test is provided for those students who are able to arrive on campus before the 7th and who feel safe and comfortable to be in a classroom on the UHM campus. Taking our placement test cannot hurt your placement; it is simply an opportunity to provide us more information that might possibly lead to a higher placement. Another option is to provide us a more recent test of your academic English (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo). As long as we receive your information by Sunday January 17th, we will be able to consider it for your Spring 2021 placement.

Information on how to register for this optional test will be sent to you after you complete the ELI Placement Form.
