Program Goals and Details

The ‘Ike Wai Undergraduate Water Science Scholars Program provides hands-on, closely mentored, paid research experiences for undergraduate students who are interested in hydrology, data science, geophysics, economics, education research, microbiology, and other fields related to the ‘Ike Wai project.

Students encouraged to apply:

  • Underrepresented students such as Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders;
  • Undergraduates from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, Chaminade University, Kapiʻolani Community College, and Honolulu Community College campuses.

All Scholars receive guidance and help from a mentor who is an ʻIke Wai faculty member. In addition to conducting research, all Scholars attend monthly meetings on professional development, and present their research results.

Application process

To apply for the 2018-2019 program, first review the available research opportunities here, then:

  1. Complete this online application form.  You will need to provide the following supporting documents:
    • Unofficial transcripts from your current institution;
      • Any prior college level classes.
      • Submit high school transcripts only if you are a 1st year student.
    • Your current resume or CV
      • In PDF format (required)
      • Education and degrees earned
      • Experience: work, volunteer, research internships, etc.
      • Skills: computer, laboratory, field, etc.
      • Honors: awards, scholarships, etc.
      • Related hobbies: hula, hiking, etc.
    • A personal statement
      • In PDF format (required)
      • Describe your interest in the ʻIke Wai Undergraduate Water Science Scholars program.
      • One page maximum, single- or double-spaced
  2. Academic reference: Please have a professional (such as a professor) who is knowledgeable about your academic performance and career potential submit a reference letter via email to epscor.ed@gmail.com.
