On July 12, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a Federal Register notice announcing the addition of eight Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes to the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List.
The DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List are fields of study that DHS considers to be science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for the purpose of the 24-month STEM optional practical training (OPT) extension. For more information on STEM OPT extension, see the STEM OPT Extension sections available on the ISS website’s OPT pages.
Each program of study at a university has its own CIP code. Find your CIP code on the first page of your Form I-20. Look at the Program of Study section, Major 1. The numerical code is next to your major and uses the format XX.XXXX
If you have any additional questions please schedule an appointment to speak with an ISS Advisor.
