The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed into law on March 27, 2020. This aid package includes payments of up to $1,200 to eligible individuals. These "rebate checks" will be based on an individual's 2019 or 2018 income tax return, and will be paid out automatically. International students may be eligible if they have a work-eligible Social Security number and filed their return for either of those years as a resident alien for tax purposes, which would be determined usually by the Substantial Presence Test. Nonresident aliens are not eligible. Nonresident aliens who file incorrectly as resident aliens are not eligible, and should contact the IRS if they think they have received a rebate for which they were not eligible because of incorrect filing.
