Frequently Asked Questions and Additional Details
Your U.S. Address is used to verify your physical presence in the U.S.
Both your U.S. Address and U.S. Phone Number serve as a point of contact if necessary while you are in your F-1 or J-1 program.
The ISS Office needs to report your U.S. Address and U.S. Phone Number as part of the activation of your immigration record.
The U.S. Government has very specific formatting restrictions for immigration records and as a result if you do not enter in your address information correctly it will not be usable for the activation and maintenance of your record. Failure to follow the formatting will result in your address being considered blank or not updating properly when trying to change your address and therefore will put your status at risk.
This information should be updated whenever it changes for you.
International Students are required to maintain a record of both their address in their home country and Physical U.S. address while they are in their program.
The University of Hawaii's MyUH system uses two different entries for address, Permanent Address and Mailing Address.
- Permanent Address cannot be changed online and requires the submission of a form to the Office of the Registrar in order to update. It is established before your arrival in the U.S.
With these reasons in mind, the Permanent Address in the UH System is linked with an international student's address in their home country. - Mailing Address can be changed by the student at any time through the online MyUH System. Students are allowed to Provide both a U.S. address and U.S. phone number through an entry in the MyUH System.
With these reasons in mind, the Mailing Address in the UH System is linked with an international student's Physical U.S. Address.
- Go to MyUH's Address Update Page
- Click on "Current" to change your current address. If you do not have a current address: find the drop down near Type of Address to Insert, select Mailing Address and click the Submit button below.
- Enter your address and phone number in the boxes in the correct format. This step will go over the expected data entered for a student doing this for the first time:
- Valid From This Date MM/DD/YYYY: Enter the Current Date
- We will not get the information from your address until the date that is entered here so we request you enter the current date.
- Until This Date: Leave Blank
- Even if you have an expected end date, your information may change and you can always update this information in the future.
- Address Line 1: Your building number and street name. Use U.S. Postal Service formatting when needed.
- Put only the building number and street name. Ex: 500 Fake St
- Use only numbers and the U.S. Standard 26 letter English alphabet.
- DO NOT put the name of your dorm building/apartment complex.
- Address Line 2: Apt Number, Room Number (if applicable)
- DO NOT use # symbol, just Letters and Numbers. Ex: Apt 206
- City: Honolulu
- State: Hawaii
- ZIP or Postal Code: Your 5 digit code associated with your address
- If you have the 9 digit version of your ZIP code (Ex: 12345-1234) You can enter that or just the first 5 digits.
- County: Oahu
- In the future if you are no longer on the island, this would be set to Not Applicable.
- Nation (If not USA): Not Applicable
- This entry is asking for the nation for the address
- Can be set to "Not Applicable" for addresses in the U.S.
- Primary Phone Number for This Address: (In the left side)
- Area Code: The 3 digit beginning of your 10 digit phone number. Example: In (808) 956-8613 the area code is 808.
- Phone Number: The 7 digits of your phone number, no dash required. Example: For (808) 956-8613 the number is 9568613
- Extension: Blank. Extensions are typically used in places of business or organizations.
- DO NOT Fill in the International Access Code of Phone Number section. This will prevent your U.S. Address and U.S. Phone Number from being counted as your local information.
- DO NOT enter in any additional phone numbers.
- Valid From This Date MM/DD/YYYY: Enter the Current Date
- Click the Submit button
- Make sure the screen that show your Current address listed is now updated with the information you entered.
