The Shangri La Center for Islamic Art and Culture
Shangri La is a center for Islamic arts and cultures, offering guided tours, residencies for scholars and artists, and programs with the purpose of improving understanding of the Islamic world. The Shangri La mansion built by Doris Duke in 1937 serves as the repository for over 2,500 pieces of Islamic art, as well as the Islamic architecture embodied in the building itself. The building is now operated by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, with tours in cooperation with the Honolulu Museum of Art.
Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art
The mission of the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic art is to promote the study and understanding of Islamic arts and cultures. That mission is pursued by the organization by supporting public tours and Islamic awareness activities at Doris Duke's waterfront home in Kahala known as Shangri La and through the New York based Building Bridges Program. The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art is one of three operation foundations supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
