-Ask questions when the teacher asks what do we want to know about the ti leaf.

-Show their notetaking skills to list important facts about the ti leaf after reading the hand-out.

Materials:

-Ti leaf hand-outs for students' use

-Ti leaf

Content:

Students will begin Hawaiian Studies mini-unit with the KWL reading strategy. The "K" and "W" columns will be completed with students' responses. The "L" column will be partially completed after notetaking activity and discussion. Students will practice their notetaking skills using a hand-out.

Motivation/Preteach:

Teacher will show a ti leaf to students and ask them what they know about it.

Procedure:

1. Show students the ti leaf.

2. Ask students to share some facts they learned from the hand-out and notes. (How big is it? Where does it grow?)

3. List students' responses in the "L" column of KWL chart.

4. Review the "L" column. Were there any questions from the "W" column that we answered?

5. Preview what will happen during the next lesson - cooperative learning group research and presentations.

Assessments:

-Students' responses when asked what do they know about the ti leaf.

-Students' questions for the "W" column of the KWL chart. Are they concrete and serious questions? Do they relate to the topic?

-Check students' notes for a list of facts that were taken from the hand-out.
