Objectives:
Students will be able
to:
-Retell sequence of
events of the story read aloud by the teacher.
-Retell uses of the
ti leaf mentioned in the story.
-Tell other uses and
facts of the ti leaf.
Materials:
-Tutu and the Ti
Plant book
-KWL chart used throughout
the mini-unit
-Lyrics to "Na Hana
A Ka La'i"
-Ukulele
Content:
Students will finish
this Hawaiian Studies mini-unit by listening to a read-aloud and volunteering
answers for the "L" list for the KWL chart. Teacher and students will
review what was learned what was learned about the ti leaf and its various
uses.
Motivation/Preteach
Teacher will read
aloud Tutu and the Ti Plant book.
Procedure:
1. Teacher will do
read-aloud.
2. Teacher will ask
students what happened in the book. (What was the first thing that happened?
What was the ti leaf used in that scene for? Did we learn about that from
our group presentations?)
3. Write down students'
responses in the "L" column of KWL chart.
4. Ask students if
there was anything else that they learned about ti leaves throughout the
mini-unit.
5. List students'
responses in the "L" column.
6. Ask for students'
comments on their experiences throughout the mini-unit. (What was your
favorite part? Was making the ti leaf lei hard for you?)
Closing Events:
Do sing-along to "Na
Hana A Ka La'i" while teacher plays ukulele. Teacher passes out students'
lei as they leave for the day.
