The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo recently announced the appointments of Stephanie Nagata as director of the Office of Mauna Kea Management and Marcia Sakai as vice chancellor for administrative affairs.

Both have served in interim capacities in these positions prior to being permanently appointed.

Nagata has been with the Office of Mauna Kea Management since it was founded in 2000 and has served as director on an interim basis for nearly four years. While serving as interim director, she led the office through the completion of the Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan, which included both cultural and natural resources management sub-plans critical to the protection of the mountain.

She has extensive experience coordinating programs, conferences and events, as well as research and feasibility studies in both public and private sectors.

Nagata holds an MBA from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and a master’s degree in wildlife biology from Colorado State University.

Marcia Sakai

Marcia Sakai

Sakai will assume permanent duties as vice chancellor for administrative affairs on June 1, 2012. She has served as interim vice chancellor since June 2011.

During her tenure as interim vice chancellor, technology improvements and upgrades through the Office of Technology and Distance Learning have resulted in 85 percent of wireless coverage across the campus. Several classrooms on campus were also upgraded to multimedia smart classrooms.

Sakai has been a UH Hilo faculty member in business administration and economics since 1991 and holds the rank of professor in tourism and economics.

She served as interim dean of the College of Business and Economics when the college was established in 2004 and was appointed dean in 2005. She led the college through its initial accreditation by AACSB – International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
