From Chair Carl Carlson
The Committee on Presidential Selection for the University of Hawaiʻi completed its work today.
The committee will send a final report to the board prior to its special meeting April 28th. The report contains fewer than five names. Some candidates chose to withdraw from the process because of its public nature.
The search has been transparent and relied on the public’s input and perspectives. Chair Carl Carlson said, “The response from the public was critical. This was an opportunity to hear from the community about what it wanted in a public university and to re-establish and rebuild a sense of trust that had been severely damaged. I believe we made progress in the dozens of public meetings with hundreds and hundreds of individuals.”
Having chosen to forego the services of both a search firm and a search consultant, and to conduct the search ourselves, we cast the widest net possible in Hawaiʻi and beyond and have vetted, screened, interviewed and considered any and all nominations we received.
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude and deepest thanks to the 13 individuals on the committee who have contributed a monumental amount of time and energy to this effort.
- Regents John Holzman, Saedene Ota, Jan Sullivan, Chuck Gee, Barry Mizuno, James Lee, Jeffrey Acido, Coralie Matayoshi, and from the UH ʻohana Dean Maenette Benham, Paul Lococo, Walter Niemczura, Richard Mizusawa and Kuhio Asam.
Thank you for the privilege of serving as chair of the Committee on Presidential Selection.
