Black History Month in February is centered around celebrating the historical and cultural contributions of African Americans, as well as raising awareness about the African American experience in the U.S. Reflecting upon the legacy of profound African American leaders, this month provides an opportunity to honor all that African Americans have done towards the betterment of society.
In honor of Black History month, UH Hilo and UH Mānoa will host the following events.
UH Hilo
The events that have been planned at the UH Hilo will provide a cultural perspective and opportunity for the institution, faculty, staff and students to learn about the achievements of African Americans and the lasting impact they have made.

- Friday, February 5, 5–7:30 p.m.: Film showing of Freedom Riders, A documentary film that chronicles the inspirational story of a courageous group of civil rights activists in the 60s. Showing will take place in UCB room 100. The event is free and popcorn, hotdogs and snacks will be provided.
- Tuesday, February 9, 7:30 p.m.: Opposing Forces, a live, contemporary performance directed and choreographed by Amy O’Neal using break dance, live beats, hip hop and gender roles as a lens to explore feminine perceptions. Performance will be held at the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center. Ticket information.
- Thursday, February 18, 2–4 p.m.: Speaker John Turner, the first neurosurgeon to serve at Hilo Medical Center, will discuss his journey and current approach to medicine. Talk will be held in the Student Services Building, room 201.
- Friday, February 26, 5–7 p.m.: Soul Food for Thought Cafe is a performance and open-mic invitation to poets, spoken word artists and musicians to share their talents. Performances will take place in the Student Services Building, room 201.

UH Mānoa

The African American Diversity and Cultural Center along with UH Mānoa are putting on the following events to recognize and celebrate the achievements of African Americans in Hawaiʻi.
- Tuesday, February 2, 4:30–6 p.m.: Black History Month Exhibition Opening Night Ceremonies at the City Hall Municipal Gallery downtown, entertainment and refreshments will be provided
- Thursday, February 4, 5:30–8 p.m.: Professor Albert Broussard, UH Mānoa Art Auditorium Lecture about the civil rights attorney T. McCants Stewart. Refreshments will be provided.
- Friday, February 5, 5:30–7 p.m.: Hawaiʻi Judiciary History Center Professor Albert Broussard Lecture about T. McCants Stewart defending Hawaiian Land rights before the Supreme Court 1899. Refreshments will be provided.
- Sunday, February 7, 1 p.m.: At Trinity Missionary Baptist Church (near the airport), Professor Albert Broussard will talk with church members and visitors. Light lunch will be served.
