U H Manoa graduates

All ten campuses of the University of Hawaiʻi System ranked better than the national average in average net price (cost after financial aid) according to the 2016 update of the College Scorecard released September 14 by the U.S. Department of Education.

In addition, UH campuses were mostly around or above the national average for salary ten years after entering. In both cases the data pertain to students who received federal financial aid.

“The 2016 College Scorecard data shows that the University of Hawaiʻi continues to deliver affordable higher education of high value,” said UH President David Lassner. “The data also reinforces the importance of our priority on improving our graduation rates.”

UH Mānoa was above the national average for graduation rate, with 56 percent of students going on to graduate within six years, compared to the national average of 42 percent. The four-year campuses, Mānoa, Hilo and West Oʻahu, surpassed the national average in students repaying their loans—88, 82 and 80 for Mānoa, Hilo and West Oʻahu, respectively, compared to the national average of 67 percent. The three four-year campuses were above or equal to the national average for students returning after their first year.

The seven UH community colleges were all significantly better than the national average in the category of Annual Average Cost, which the scorecard lists as $16,595.

“As a recent study out of the University of Pennsylvania found, the UH community college system is the most affordable in the nation and the College Scorecard supports those findings,” said Vice President for Community Colleges John Morton. “One area that we are focusing on our graduation rate, though when you factor in the community college students that transfer to our four year colleges, our graduation rate would be at about the national average.”

The College Scorecard is an online tool providing data verified by the U.S. Department of Education on thousands of institutions across the nation. It allows users to compare schools in a variety of categories. Read more about the College Scorecard and the Scorecard Fact Sheet.
