Joseph Bariyanga at the 2017 Boston Marathon.

University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu Associate Professor Joseph Bariyanga placed third in his age group (males, age 60 to 64) at the 2017 Boston Marathon.

He ran his personal best of 3 hours, 2 minutes, 8 seconds, finishing 1,677 overall out of 26,411 race participants.

It was Bariyanga’s third marathon. He also competed in the Honolulu Marathon in 2015 (3:03:27) and the Rwandan Marathon in 2016 (3:17:09).

“My initial (running) goals were to run the three marathons: Honolulu, Rwanda, and Boston,” Bariyanga said. “Now that I have accomplished that I have to focus to something else. However, I would like to return to Boston in the hope that the weather will be cooler to really see where I stand among my age group runners. Also I may run the Honolulu Marathon this year just for promoting healthy living, especially for my students.”
