The Office of Maunakea Management has detailed its award-winning record of cultural and resource management following a resolution passed by the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents in August that reaffirmed the university’s support of collaborative management.

The following is an excerpt from a story posted on the Office of Maunakea Management website:

The Office of Maunakea Management has been mission driven since its formation in 2000 to protect, preserve and enhance Maunakea’s cultural and natural resources. The successful management of such an immense, diverse and remote acreage on Maunakea is the result of purposeful research, resource monitoring programs, and development of and implementation of resource protection plans through a process involving both Native Hawaiian consultation and the Hawaiʻi Island community.

The Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan, together with the natural resources (PDF) and cultural resources management (PDF), public access (PDF) and decommissioning plans, guides the organization in the development and implementation of management initiatives to protect these resources.

Compendiums to these plans include a State Historic Preservation Division approved Burial Treatment Plan and an award-winning Long-term Monitoring Plan. These plans call for annual assessment of archeological sites on UH’s managed lands on Maunakea and provide guidance for the protection of burials.
