The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa retained top rankings in the U.S. and international communities according to the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, released on August 15.

ARWU selected about 1,000 of the best research universities to be considered in its ranking process from more than 20,000 universities in the world. In the 2018 ranking, UH Mānoa stayed in the 70–95 range in the U.S., and in the 201–300 range in the world.

Compiled every year since 2003, the ARWU ranking uses six weighted indicators to determine an institution’s academic and research performance, including Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; highly cited researchers; papers published in Nature and Science; papers cited in major citation indices; and the per capita performance of each institution.

ARWU ranks universities based on objective indicators and third-party data, and is considered one of the most reliable ranking systems to observe the academic performance of world research universities.

On top of the overall ranking, ARWU also rates the subject areas at each campus internationally.
