The University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents approved the three-year extension of UH Mānoa Athletics Director David Matlin until 2023.

Matlin has been the athletics director at UH Mānoa for the past four years. His extension will be for the same salary. His current contract has 14 months remaining.

During his tenure, the student-athlete graduation rate hit a program record 85 percent over the past two years along with the highest cumulative GPA of 3.12 this past fall. Matlin hired seven new coaches, including football coach Nick Rolovich, Wahine volleyball coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos and men’s basketball coach Eran Ganot.

Several high-profile sports qualified for postseason play under his leadership—football (2 bowl appearances), men’s basketball (2016 NCAA), women’s basketball (2016 NCAA, 2019 NIT), women’s volleyball (2015–18 NCAA) and men’s volleyball (2015, 2017 NCAA).

Matlin has worked to lower travel costs and signed an exclusive contract with Under Armour. He secured a multimedia rights partnership that includes guaranteed increasing rights fees.

“We are pleased to add stability to our Athletics Department by extending David’s contract,” said UH President and UH Mānoa Interim Chancellor David Lassner. “He has worked tirelessly to improve our program and the opportunities for our student-athletes.”

“I want to say I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our student-athletes, UH and our great state,” Matlin said. “I am humbled to work beside an amazing group of professionals who care so much about athletics and have dedicated themselves to helping us get better each and every day.”

Matlin has more than three decades of sports and entertainment marketing and management experience.
