Dylan Sugimoto

Over the course of a very successful week, a University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo tennis player and baseball star have been named the Pepsi Athletes of the Week.

Dylan Sugimoto

Senior outfielder Sugimoto earns the award for his work over a long weekend—one in which the Vulcans swept Holy Names. Sugimoto raised his batting average 36 points in four games to .333. He went a scorching 7 for 11 in the four games, scored four times, drove in three runs, hit a double and walked four times. In the series opening win, Sugimoto hit a two-bagger in the bottom of the ninth that helped jump start a four-run rally in a 5–4 comeback win. On the year, he is tied for the team lead in runs scored and stolen bases, leads in on-base percentage (.438) and is second in batting average (.333).

Martin Soukal

Freshman tennis player Soukal had a good week at the Pacific West Conference Tennis Championships. At the tournament in Arizona, Soukal was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year, in part to his 13–1 singles record on the season and his 13–3 doubles mark. In Arizona, Soukal won all three of his singles matches as the Vulcans reached the title match. He defeated Leyton Bohren of Azusa Pacific in a tense match and stopped Hawaiʻi Pacific’s Benjamin Loccisano.
