Forbes magazine has named the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa to its 2019 list of America’s Best Value Colleges.

UH Mānoa ranks 190 out of 300 ranked national colleges and universities for best value. There are more than 2.400 four-year institutions of higher education in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The rankings are based on criteria such as school quality, timely graduation, alumni earnings and access for low-income students. “Best value” is defined as receiving an excellent educational return on one of people’s “most important investments of their lives.”

The magazine characterized UH Mānoa as a land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant institution that is “a global leader in earth and environmental sciences. With minorities making up more than 70 percent of the student body, Mānoa embodies the Hawaiian spirit of aloha, a term that refers to mutual regard.”

Forbes said UH Mānoa was classified among doctoral universities as having the highest research activity. Also, the publication noted that the flagship among 10 UH campuses is known for its pioneering research in the fields including oceanography, astronomy, Pacific Islands and Asian area studies, linguistics, cancer research and genetics.

Other rankings

In addition to recognition from Forbes, UH Mānoa was recently recognized as 214th internationally by Round University Ranking, and for excellence in eight UH graduate schools and programs by the U.S. News and World Report’s 2020 ranking.
