For the eighth consecutive year, Leeward Community College celebrated Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month with a variety of activities and events geared to increase awareness of the college’s CTE programs.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program kicked off the activities on February 1. Coordinated by the accounting faculty, Leeward CC‘s VITA Program has provided free, live tax preparation services for more than 30 years. The free community program continues through March.

In early February, more than 500 students from Leeward CC and Central Oʻahu middle and high schools toured the campus and engaged in hands-on activities with CTE faculty and students.

Leeward CC‘s CTE Programs encompass many different forms of education, including traditional classroom learning, certification courses and work-based learning opportunities outside of the classroom. CTE students gain industry-relevant skills for high-wage, high-demand careers while learning from faculty who are experts in their field, have real-world experience, and take time to help each individual student.

The statewide SkillsUSA Automotive Competition in late February featured 13 high school students from across the state. Contestants were judged on technical competency, accuracy, quality, safety and ability to follow directions at 13 different skill stations. The top three students received scholarships to a University of Hawaiʻi Community College automotive program and additional prizes from Snap-On Tools.

Rounding out the month were the Spring Fair featuring student entrepreneurs, the sold-out Culinary Arts Scholarship Brunch and the Culinary Arts Employment Fair.
