The University of Hawaiʻi’s oldest community college, Honolulu Community College, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The campus kicked off the celebration with a party in February, with ice cream, cupcakes and more.

Honolulu CC has been recognized for its apprenticeship and other career and technical programs, Hawaiian studies center and commitment to sustainability. The school started in 1920 with 42 students in the old Chinese Hospital building in Pālama.

Interim Chancellor Karen Lee said, “If I had to pick one thing about why Honolulu Community College is a draw for students, I would say it’s our sense of ʻohana. Our students here love being here. They feel well taken care of.”

The campus produced a video to keep the celebration going virtually and bring a smile to the faces of the students, faculty and staff who are unable to be on campus because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
