University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Athletic Director Pat Guillen started up some friendly cooking competition with his fellow athletic directors (AD) from the Hawaiʻi universities. The ADs are making their best dishes then challenging another AD to see if they can handle the heat in the 2020 Hawaiʻi AD Grindz challenge.
Inspired by UH Mānoa men’s golf coach Ronn Miyashiro and his cooking tutorials on ‘Bows Kitchen, the competition kicked off with Guillen who demonstrated his favorite comfort food—Mom’s Fried Chicken.
“We cannot wait to see our students, fans, corporate sponsors and entire community back on campus at our events when it is deemed safe,” said Guillen in his video. “Until then enjoy the fun videos and I am anxious to see what my colleagues and friends at UH Mānoa, Hawaiʻi Pacific and Chaminade cook up!”
Guillen then challenged UH Mānoa’s AD David Matlin, who was quick to act and fired up a new ‘Bows Kitchen episode featuring his famous “Chicken As Good As It Gets” recipe. In the video, Matlin replied to Guillen, “On behalf of Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior nation, challenge accepted!”

At the end of the episode, Matlin challenges Sam Moku, the AD from Hawaiʻi Pacific University who has yet to post his best dish. The challenge will conclude with Chaminade’s Bill Villa.
The challenge originated as a way for the ADs—not known for their cooking prowess—to have some fun, bring a smile to people’s faces, and thank the community and fans of the Rainbow Warriors, Vulcans, Sharks and Silverswords.
