People with a passion for the ocean are invited to submit their best photos from July 31 to September 7 to celebrate Get Into Your Sanctuary Day with the Waikīkī Aquarium, in partnership with NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, through the Hoʻokūkū Kiʻi Kai Ocean photo contest.

Photos of the ocean and marine sanctuaries could win prizes from ProCamera, Huish Outdoors and more.

“The Ocean Photo Contest encourages people of all ages to share their passion for the ocean while practicing safe social distancing,” said Andrew Rossiter, director of the Waikīkī Aquarium. “We’re always exploring new ways to engage with the community, and with this photo contest we can’t wait to see the unique images that contestants submit.”

Contest details

Participants can submit photos of ocean views, marine life and sanctuary recreation. Photos can be under or above water, but must be taken in Hawaiʻi from January 2020 and onward.

Four winners will be selected in the following categories to receive a variety of prizes:

  • Youth (ages 13–17)
  • Adult (ages 18 and older)
  • Professional Photographer
  • Grand Prize

In addition, nine entries will win two Waikīkī Aquarium day admission tickets and will be featured in a 2021 marine tide calendar.

Participants can complete the required form and submit their best photos online at the Waikīkī Aquarium website.

Public voting will take place from August 24 through September 7, with the top 20 photos reviewed by a panel of judges from September 8–15.
