University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo senior veterans Valerie Alvarado and Bria Beale claimed this week’s Pepsi Athletes of the Week awards.
Pitcher Alvarado was outstanding as the softball Vulcans swept four games over Chaminade University, March 20–21. Alvarado pitched a total of 16 innings and didn’t allow an earned run, notching a win and a no decision. She gave up just nine hits the entire weekend in the games played in Kona, walked 10 and fanned six.
Leading UH Hilo to three wins, outside hitter Beale posted at least 16 kills and 14 digs in all four volleyball matches against Hawaiʻi Pacific University and Chaminade last weekend. She finished the week with an attack percentage of .234, recording 68 kills, 64 digs, 13 aces and seven blocks, leading the tournament in total points with 84.5.
