More than 90% of students attending the 10 campuses of the University of Hawaiʻi have been vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus or plan to be, according to a week-long survey administered the week of August 9, 2021. About 27% of all UH students registered for the fall 2021 semester responded to the survey, 12,390 students out of 45,930 students. The findings are similar to the student survey from late June that found 92% of the UH students who responded at that time were vaccinated or planned to be.
The August survey findings include:
- 83.4% of UH students are fully vaccinated
- 4.3% are partially vaccinated
- 2.6% plan to be vaccinated
- 9.4% are not vaccinated (1,164 total)
Among those who are NOT vaccinated:
- 50% say they will be on a UH campus in the fall 2021 semester for in-person classes, employment, in-person activities, etc.
- 47% say they will only be vaccinated when a vaccine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
- 37% say the prefer not to be vaccinated and will take courses online
The first day of fall classes is Monday, August 23. To be on a UH campus for the fall 2021 semester, students, employees and visitors are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Those who are unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated (two weeks after the second dose) must submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test result weekly to be on campus. The UH COVID-19 testing program will be announced later this week.
There are some courses—clinicals, labs, performing arts, field work—that require vaccination without exception because safe physical distancing cannot be maintained.
Anyone who comes to campus must first receive a green “You may report to campus” status with the current date on the LumiSight UH daily health check app. The app screens for COVID-19 symptoms and exposure. Vaccination information or negative COVID-19 test results must be uploaded to the app as part of the clearance to be on campus.
