U H sailboats on the water

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa coed sailing team hosts the 2023 Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference (PCCSC) Fleet Race Championship, April 21–22, at the Keʻehi Lagoon Honolulu Community College Marine Education Center. The first race will begin at 10 a.m. each day, weather permitting. The regatta features 14 schools competing over the course of two days with UH hosting the event for the first time since 2018.

The top two finishers in the regatta will qualify for the 2023 national championships, which will be hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point, N.Y., in late May. UH looks to make its second straight appearance in the fleet nationals and 19th overall appearance for the program. The Rainbow Wahine sailors have already punched their ticket to New York and the women’s national semifinals after finishing second in the PCCSC Women’s Championship held last weekend Santa Barbara, Calif.

This weekend will also mark the final home regatta for senior sailors Owen Lahr, Kelsie Grant, Chloe Long, Katherine Shofran, Taylor Ledgerwood and Frances Tarpey-Schwed.

In addition to preparing for the championship regatta, the UH sailing team along with athletes and coaches from the UH soccer and swimming teams held a waterfront cleanup on April 20 at Sand Island in the area where spectators will be watching. The cleanup was joined by sailors from UC Santa Barbara, who will be competing in the regatta.
