(Editor’s note: How to help Maui ʻohana affected by wildfires)
This message was shared with the students, faculty and staff of the 10-campus University of Hawaiʻi system on August 9, 2023.
Aloha UH ʻohana,
It has been a sad and difficult day for all of us as we awakened to see the heartbreaking images and learned of the tragic impacts of the devastating wildfires on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island, especially Lahaina. Our hearts go out to those affected by this unprecedented natural disaster.
More on how to help Maui ʻohana and the Maui wildfires.
We want everyone in our ʻohana who has been impacted to know that we are all hoping for the best for you, your families, your friends and your homes. UH stands ready with our state, county and non-profit partners to help where we can. UH Maui College is already helping prepare hot meals for the thousands of people in shelters—mahalo to Chancellor Hokoana and our culinary faculty for that.
If you need assistance, please contact your campus or email news@hawaii.edu.
E mālama pono,
David Lassner
