The University of Hawaiʻi women’s soccer team earned postseason recognition as part of The Big West 2023 All-Conference team on October 28, with forward Amber Gilbert voted to the first team.
Rainbow Wahine midfielder Eliza Ammendolia and defender Jacey Jicha were voted to the All-Big West second team by the conference’s coaches, and midfielder Izzy Ayala earned a place on the All-Freshman Team.
Gilbert was named to the All-Freshman team last season and leads the Rainbow Wahine as a sophomore with seven goals in the regular season. Her goal total ranks third in the Big West with three coming in conference play. Gilbert averages .467 goals per game, is second in the conference andstarted each of her 30 career matches. Gilbert enters the Big West Championship with the team’s longest active starting streak. She is UH‘s No. 12 first-team honoree since the program joined the Big West in 2012.
Ammendolia earned All-Big West recognition for the fourth time in her career. She was a first-team pick in 2019 and ’22, made the second team in 2021 and was part of the All-Freshman team in 2019. Ammendolia is the first UH player to earn all-conference honors four times.This season, Ammendolia scored a long-range goal against UC San Diego and has two assists.
Jicha made the All-Big West second team for the second straight year. She started all 15 matches this season as the anchor of the Rainbow Wahine defense and ranks second among UH field players with 1,221 minutes. Jicha has played all 90 minutes in 11 matches this season, including 10 of the last 11.
Ayala quickly established herself in the midfield and started all 15 matches of her freshman season, logging 1,160 minutes of playing time. She posted goals against CSUN and CSU Bakersfield.
The Rainbow Wahine open play in the Big West Women’s Soccer Championship on November 5 at Cal Poly. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Pacific Time, 11 a.m. Hawaiʻi Time.
