Aeo, Hawaiian stilt

This week’s UH News Image of the Week is from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Melissa Price, an associate professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience.

Price shared: “This is an Aeʻo, or Hawaiian Stilt. I took the photo near the Kaʻelepulu Canal in Kailua. Hawaiian Stilts were downlisted to Threatened status in 2021. They nest in mudflats and utilize wetlands and loʻi to nest, with a nesting season that peaks from January to May. Our lab (Hawaiʻi Wildlife Ecology Lab) has been doing nesting, habitat use, and genetics studies to support conservation efforts.”
