University of Hawaiʻi President Wendy Hensel wrapped up her visit to Kauaʻi Community College on March 5, with a reception at Kilohana Plantation, where she was warmly welcomed by more than 50 alumni, donors, UH faculty and community members. The event, hosted by the UH Foundation, offered an opportunity for locals to strengthen their connection with the new president and reflect on the university’s deep ties to the island.

Kauaʻi CC graduate Kalei Carvalho, who is an academic counselor for Native Hawaiian students at the campus, captured the spirit of the evening:
“As a proud alumnus of three UH campuses, including Kauaʻi Community College, it was inspiring to witness the strong support for our campus and be surrounded by attendees whose dedication and collaboration make the University of Hawaiʻi such a special community,” said Carvalho, who also holds degrees from UH West Oʻahu and UH Mānoa.
Hensel expressed her gratitude to the attendees, noting the powerful stories shared by alumni and community members about how the university has shaped their lives.
“What I’ve heard today is people love their school,” she said. “That’s something you can’t make up, and it’s something you can’t replace.”
The event also featured remarks from UH Regent Laurel Loo and Kauaʻi CC Chancellor Margaret Sanchez.
“[President Hensel] has been an extremely strong UH leader who has sought collaboration and community in making the tough decisions that she’s had to make so far,” Sanchez said.
Reflecting on the enduring impact of UH on the island, Hensel pledged her continued support.
“It means so much that you’re here to support me as I begin, and please know that I will be back here fighting the fights as we go forward,” she said.
