WHAT:  The 15th Biennial University of  Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) Open House

WHO:  Friday, October 25, estimated 4,000 (K-12 students); Saturday, October 26, estimated 2,000 (families and community members).

 More than 6,500 people attended the last SOEST Open House held in 2017.

WHEN:       Friday, October 25, 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m.; Saturday, October 26, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

WHERE:     University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, various locations  

  • UH Mānoa faculty, students and staff sharing their cutting edge research and their love of science with elementary school students and the community 

  • Nearly 80 different exhibits including:

    • Make-A-Quake: Simulate a real earthquake in a model of the Pacific region.

    • Explosive Volcanism: Safe demonstration of an explosive eruption fueled by dry ice. In less than 1 second, an explosion will carry 20 gallons of water into a 10-meter-high eruption column.

    • Hawai‘i Weather: See how flash flooding happens and learn about weather safety.   

    • Surf’s up!: What causes waves? And how do you measure waves?

    • Create a hurricane: Create ideal hurricane conditions by changing the winds, latitude, moisture, and sea temperature in an interactive online game.

    • Cloud in a bottle: Learn how clouds form by creating your own cloud in a bottle.

    • Rocks of the World: Remarkable rocks from around the world will be on display for students to touch and learn about its origin.

  •  The Waikīkī Aquarium, Schmidt Ocean Institute, State of Hawai‘i Division of Aquatic Resources and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will also have booths and staff on hand to share their work

  • Visitors will get to explore state-of-the-art laboratories on the UH Mānoa campus 

  • Visit state-of-the-art laboratories and hear about cutting-edge research from the scientists who are making new discoveries!

  • This is the 15th biennial event

  • More than 6,500 people attended the last SOEST Open House held in 2017.

  • The event is free and open to the public.
