The University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa‘s Center on the Family has developed information and resource lists for families affected by reduced work hours, furloughs, or layoffs resulting from the economic consequences of the events of September 11.

The information package includes three pieces:

· "Coping with Financial Stress" — a brochure covering how to cope emotionally when income is reduced. Also included will be a list of government and community resources with names and contact information for organizations providing financial assistance and free or low-cost job placement, financial counseling, and family support services.

· "Stretch Your Dollar: Money Saving Ideas" — tips on large and small ways to reduce daily household expenses.

· "Overcoming Job Loss: A Family Guide" — A 25-page resource booklet to assist families faced with unemployment that covers coping with the emotional changes, job hunting and budgeting.

Printed materials are now available and the information will also be posted on the Center on the Family‘s website, www.uhfamily.hawaii.edu.

The Center on the Family is a unit within the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at UH Manoa. Its mission is to enhance interdisciplinary research, service and education that supports and strengthens families, most often with a focus on the multicultural families of Hawaiʻi.

The Center‘s research and outreach activities focus on economic strain and families, family resilience and the healthy development of children, the consequences for children of parental childrearing beliefs and practices, and monitoring the well being of families and children in Hawaiʻi. Staff work closely with colleagues across disciplinary fields at UH and other academic institutions, and collaborate with nonprofit and community organizations, governmental agencies and private businesses.
