U.S. Army General Eric Shinseki (ret.) will appear as the first guest presenter of the academic year in the UH Manoa Distinguished Lecture Series.

The Kauaʻi native and former Army Chief of Staff will speak to "Challenges in the Effective Use of Force," at the UHM Campus Center Ballroom on Tuesday, November 8, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.

General Shinseki graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and has a master‘s degree in English from Duke University. His military career included two tours of duty in Vietnam, as well as postings in Hawaiʻi, Texas, German and Italy.

Shinseki was commanding general U.S. Army Europe, and, in 1999, became Chief of Staff of the Army. He was one of the principal architects of the current revolution in military affairs.

The Distinguished Lecture Series of the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa regularly hosts extraordinarily talented men and women whose work in the arts, sciences, humanities or public affairs is innovative and significant, and gives them a forum in which to share their contributions with the people of Hawai'i.

Other speakers this academic year will include Steven Squyres of Cornell University, principal investigator for the Mars Exploration Rover Project — speaking in mid-January — and Alexander McCall Smith, author of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, The Sunday Philosophy Club, and other works, scheduled to speak in late March.
