HONOLULU — The Honolulu Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, was recently recognized as one of 25 to receive the "Distinguished Chapter" Award. The HCC chapter, Alpha Kappa Iota, was selected from among 1,200 chapters of the honor society located at community and junior colleges across the United States, Canada, Germany, Micronesia and Palau.

Members of HCC‘s Alpha Kappa Iota chapter—Demusthenis Bordaje, Tami Ikegami, and Amanda Wong—were on hand at the society‘s international convention in Seattle recently to accept the award. The chapter advisor is HCC professor Lena Low. To be considered for a Distinguished Chapter Award, a chapter must submit applications for Scholarship, Leadership and Service Hallmark Awards, and the scores in each of these three categories are averaged to determine a chapter‘s overall ranking.

In addition to HCC‘s award, several other awards were presented to colleges within the Pacific Region, which includes 12 chapters at colleges in Hawaiʻi, Guam, Micronesia and Palau. The Pacific Region was honored with the Regional Milestone Award for renewed enthusiasm and participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs, and individual awards were presented to Guam Community College Chapter Advisor Eric Chong and Kapiʻolani Community College Chapter Officer Christine Tooher. Guam Community College President Dr. H. de los Santos was also honored with the Shirley B. Gordon Award for College Presidents.

Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.5 million members and 1,200 chapters. Its mission is to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and to provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
