HILO, Hawaiʻi — Jaime Nakagawa, a student in the marketing program at Hawaiʻi Community College, was recently awarded honorable mention in the national Yellow Pages Association (YPA) Collegiate Creative Competition.

Nakagawa was one of fourteen entries submitted by Hawaiʻi Community College marketing students enrolled in a spring 2006 Principles of Advertising class. Contest rules required each individual or team participating to submit two Yellow Pages print ads and one Internet Yellow Pages ad for Floral Fantasy, a Cincinnati, Ohio florist.

According to Neg Norton, president of the Yellow Pages Association, judging took place on May 1, 2006. Eight winners were selected from more than 300 entries, representing the work of 573 students enrolled at 67 colleges and universities nationwide. Judges cited Nakagawa‘s entry as "an excellent example of integrating copy and visuals in a way that makes the consumer want to read the ad ... good use of space in a larger ad size."

As a result of winning, Nakagawa will have her work displayed on the YPA Academic Web site http://www.ypa-academics.org/cc and other venues, and will be honored at the YPA Annual Convention. In addition, she receives a monetary award of $500.
