HONOLULU — Hawaiian Telcom unveiled the covers for its 2006-2007 Oʻahu Yellow Pages and new companion directory on Thursday, September 14, at the University of Hawaiʻi Wahine volleyball game.

The Covers
To celebrate the University of Hawaiʻi‘s 100th anniversary in 2007, Hawaiian Telcom‘s 2006-2007 Oʻahu directories will feature the art of Leeward Community College student Dawn Groves on their covers. Earlier this year an art contest was held to create art with the theme of "Celebrating 100 Years of Higher Education in Hawaii — A Century Through an Artist‘s Eyes." The contest was open to all University of Hawaiʻi part-time and full-time students, faculty, and staff enrolled or employed at University of Hawaii campuses at any time during the spring 2006 semester.

"According to the judges, one student‘s piece stood out among the others because it truly exemplified the contest theme," said Ron Montgomery, vice president and general manager of Hawaiian Telcom Directories. "When we looked at it, we definitely agreed. Because Dawn Grove‘s piece was so phenomenal, we chose to feature her winning art on all the main Oʻahu directories, as well as feature other art of hers on the Oʻahu companion directory and the neighbor-island directories."

The covers of the new Oʻahu White and Yellow Pages, as well as the neighborhood directories, will feature Dawn Groves work — "A Passion for Knowledge" — which portrays the University of Hawaiʻi in the past, present, and future.

"I wanted my piece to show the evolution of the University of Hawaiʻi and learning," Groves said. "I hope that others will be inspired in their own way by this piece."

The new Oʻahu companion directory also features a digitally-enhanced photograph taken by Groves of a canoe. The Maui County, Kauaʻi County, and Hawaiʻi Island directories being distributed in February 2007 also will feature photos taken by Groves in each county.

"We are thankful to Hawaiian Telcom for this opportunity. Dawn‘s design truly showcases some of the creativity and talent housed in our diverse student population," said David McClain, UH president. "As we prepare to celebrate 100 years of educational excellence, we look forward to sharing even more of what the university contributes to transforming our local and global communities."

The UH Centennial
Beginning in 2007, the University of Hawai'i will mark 100 years of public higher education in Hawai'i. Commemorative events will provide opportunities to reflect on past accomplishments, celebrate the vitality of today‘s university, and to give some thought to how the institution can best serve our community in the second century.

The Cover Artist
For the past 20 years, Dawn E. Groves has been a critical-care registered nurse specializing in cardiology, intensive care, and emergency services. After being injured on the job and unable to perform her duties, Dawn enrolled at Leeward Community College and is currently working to earn her second degree in digital media.

The Oʻahu Companion Directory
Hawaiian Telcom Directories is launching a new Oʻahu companion directory, which will be distributed to homes and businesses in October. The new companion directory combines the features of the Hawaiian Telcom Oʻahu Yellow pages in a convenient portable size.

"The new companion directory is the perfect tool for a person on the go," said Ron Montgomery, vice president and general manager of Hawaiian Telcom Directories. "It‘s convenient, small, portable, and can fit easily in the car, purse, or briefcase."

The directory will include the same emergency information, maps, and coupons found in the Oʻahu Yellow Pages and will provide a compact and comprehensive source of business information.

The Directories
The Hawaiian Telcom Oʻahu Directories will feature new enhancements, including pages featuring cover artist Dawn Groves and information about the University of Hawaiʻi‘s centennial celebration. As the state‘s most comprehensive directory, the books will remain the most important resource for emergency and community information. The Oʻahu White Pages, Oʻahu Yellow Pages, Oʻahu companion directory, Leeward directory, Windward directory, and East Honolulu directory will be delivered to homes and businesses in October. The directories for Maui County, Kauaʻi County, and Hawaiʻi Island will be delivered in February 2007.
