University of Hawai'i Instructor Wins National Prize

WASHINGTON, D.C.-University of Hawai'i at Manoa Chinese language instructor Song Jiang was recently awarded co-recipient of the 2001 Walton Presentation Prize along with Jun Yang of the University of Arizona during the 2001 Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA) Annual Conference held in Washington, D.C.

Jiang presented his paper, "Chinese Word Associations for English Speaking Learners" at the conference. Each recipient is awarded $250 and receives an invitation for publication in the Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association. The prize is given to individuals who give an outstanding presentation at the CLTA Annual Meeting. Preference is given to teachers at the pre-college level and graduate students who have their paper proposals accepted for the meeting.

Jiang's research interests include historical linguistics of Chinese, Chinese dialects and their classification, and teaching Chinese as a second language. His publications include "Mandarin Lexical Differences between Taiwan and Mainland China," "The Evolution of Voiced Initials from Middle Chinese in the Southeastern E Group of Dialects and Their Classification," and "Transition of 'Zhi' and 'Zhao' Initial Consonants in the South-East Hubei Dialect."

The 2001 CLTA Annual Meeting was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
