School of Architecture hosts Seventh International Symposium on Asia Pacific Architecture

HONOLULU — The School of Architecture at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, in collaboration with Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning in Shanghai, China, present the 7th International Symposium on Asia Pacific Architecture, June 14-16, 2007, on the UH Mānoa campus. The event is a Centennial celebration for both universities. This year‘s symposium is titled, "Architecture + Movement," and will offer of a number of sessions and panel discussions featuring leading architects and experts in urban planning.

Keynote speakers are William Mitchell of MIT and author of "City of Bits," Donald MacDonald, renowned architect of bridges, and Robert Ivy, editor of Architectural Records.

Invited panelists include:

  • Pat Caughey, National president of ASLA

  • Randall Crane, associate director, Institute of Transportation Studies

  • Daniel Dinell, executive director, HCDA, Honolulu, HI

  • Zhong-Ren Peng, professor, Department of Urban Planning, University of Milwaukee

  • Michael Shiffer, Vice President for Planning & Development, Chicago Transit Authority & Associate Professor of Planning, University of Illinois at Chicago

The welcome and opening session on Thursday, June 14, will include Mayor Mufi Hannemann and a webcast from Tongji University, who hosted the event in 2005.

Winners of the 2007 Kenneth F. Brown Asia Pacific Culture Architecture Design Award, sponsored by the UH School of Architecture and the Asia-Pacific Center for Architecture, will be presented their award during the opening reception on June 13.

The $400 registration fee for UH students, faculty and staff has been waived allowing the university community to take part in symposium free of charge. Fees to participate in the opening reception on June 13 and the closing reception on June 16 will still apply.
