The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will hold summer commencement exercises on Sunday, August 12, 2007, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony — at the lower campus Stan Sheriff Center — will include conferral of degrees for both undergraduates and advanced degree candidates. Nearly 500 undergraduates and 515 graduate students are eligible to receive degrees this term, and approximately 300 students are expected to participate in the ceremony.

Keynote speaker will be Mānoa‘s new Chancellor, Virginia S. Hinshaw, who assumed her position on July 1. An academic leader with a distinguished record of accomplishment as provost and executive vice chancellor of the University of California, Davis, Dr. Hinshaw is also a renowned scientist with expertise in microbiology. Her work over the past 25 years has aided in the understanding of the influenza virus and new approaches to vaccines. She previously was an administrator and researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Candidates for honors are Rachel Choy and Paul Linden.

During the university‘s Centennial commemorative period — January 2007-May 2008 — graduating students receive specially embossed diploma covers with the UH Centennial insignia imprinted in gold on the front. Graduates are also eligible to purchase and wear a medallion designed specifically for commencement. The medallion may be viewed at http://www.bookstore.hawaii.edu/uhgrad. Both the centennial diploma covers and the commemorative medallion will only be available through the May 2008 commencement ceremony.

The university has established a Commencement Hotline that should provide answers to questions about both student and public participation in the ceremony. Call the hotline at 956-GRAD (956-4723), or check on the Web at http://manoa.hawaii.edu/commencement.

Doors to the Stan Sheriff Center will open at 8 a.m. for the combined undergraduate and advanced degree ceremony which is expected to last for about two hours. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis; no tickets are required. Balloons and strollers are not allowed inside the Stan Sheriff Center.

Free parking will be available in the lower campus parking structure; there will be no shuttle service from upper campus parking lots. Friends and family members may greet graduates following the ceremony at Les Murakami Stadium, and authorized lei vendors will be located in front of the stadium. There will be a live Webcast of the ceremony. For information, visit http://www.hawaii.edu/dl/commencement/.
