Hawai'i Community College and Kea'au Youth Business Center Presents "Meet the Filmmakers," June 20-22

HILO, Hawaiʻi — Hawaiʻi Community College, in conjunction with the Keaʻau Youth Business Center (KYBC) and other community organizations and businesses, is giving Hawaiʻi‘s up-and-coming filmmakers and afficionados of all ages an opportunity to "Meet the Filmmakers" through a series of workshops to be held June 20-22.

The workshops will feature Industry veterans John Simmons, an award-winning cinematographer and director of photography at Universal Studios, and Chuck Kemmerer, a 25-year veteran of Hollywood‘s motion imaging field and current senior technical and sales consultant for Fuji Photo Film in Los Angeles.

"A Screening and Conversation with John Simmons and Chuck Kemmerer" will be held on Friday, June 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Historic Palace Theatre at 38 Haili Street. Admission is free for youth up to 18 years of age, and adults are $5. Advance tickets are available from the Palace Theatre Box Office by calling 934-7777. The screening will be followed by a reception with gourmet pupus prepared by MAPS International, KYBC‘s entrepreneurial culinary arts youth group.Simmons and Kemmerer will also present two workshops:

  • "Filmmaking 101"

    9 a.m. — 4 p.m.
    Keʻeau Youth Business Center, 16-540 Keaau-Pahoa Highway, Suite 6This workshop will cover low-cost but effective lighting techniques, set operations and protocol, and provide an introduction to the motion picture business. The workshop requires a registration fee of $10 to the Keaʻau Youth Business Center and is limited to the first 15 registrants.

  • "Lighting Techniques and More for Film and Video"

    8 a.m. — 4 p.m.
    Keʻeau Youth Business Center, 16-540 Keaau-Pahoa Highway, Suite 6This workshop features more advanced lighting techniques for film and video. It also includes continental breakfast and lunch. The cost for the workshop is $75, which includes the cost of the meals.

    In conjunction with Hawaiʻi CC and KYBC, the "Meet the Filmmakers" events are co-sponsored by the Historic Palace Theatre, the Big Island Film Office, Grassroots Community Development Group, Puna Fresh Foods, Pizza Hawaii, Legends Bar and Grill and Moana Nui Foundation.
