UH Manoa’s Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i announces final four candidates for director

The four finalists are:
Robert W. Haile, Dr.P.H., associate director of cancer causes and prevention at the University of Southern California (USC) Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center for three years. He has been a professor and director of the genetic epidemiology program at the USC School of Medicine for fifteen years. Haile received a bachelor‘s degree in psychology from the University of California at Riverside, and a master‘s degree in population, family and international health and doctoral degree in epidemiology from UCLA. His previous experience includes service as faculty in the department of epidemiology at UCLA for twelve years. A public presentation by Haile is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Anthony Shields, M.D., Ph.D., associate center director for clinical research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute for seven years, has been a professor of medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan for fourteen years. Shields obtained his undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an M.D. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in biology from MIT. Shields‘ previous experience includes heading the gastrointestinal oncology service. Presently leading the program in developmental therapeutics, he is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. A public presentation by Shields is scheduled for Monday, July 6, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Michele Carbone, M.D., Ph.D., interim director of the UH Mānoa CRCH, is a professor and chair of the department of pathology. Carbone received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Medical School of Rome "La Sapienza." He came to the United States as a recipient of a Fogarty Fellow Award in 1986. Carbone‘s previous experience includes service as professor of pathology and director of the thoracic oncology program at the Cancer Center of the Loyola University of Chicago. In his current research, Carbone studies the pathogenesis of mesothelioma. He is board certified in anatomic pathology in Italy and the United States. A public presentation by Carbone is scheduled for Monday, July 13, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Steven R. Patierno, Ph.D., executive director of the George Washington University Cancer Institute for six years, is a professor of pharmacology, genetics and urology, and a professor of environmental and occupational health. Patierno obtained a degree in pharmacy from the University of Connecticut, and a Ph.D. in pharmacology and molecular oncology from the University of Texas Health Science Center. He was the founding director of the Molecular and Cellular Oncology program at the George Washington Cancer Institute, and a NIH-funded post-doctoral fellow at the University of Southern California Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. A public presentation by Patierno is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
