His Excellency President Hisashi Owada of the International Court of Justice to visit UH Mānoa Law School

The UH Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law is proud to announce that His Excellency President Hisashi Owada of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will visit the Law School as the 2010 Bright International Jurist in Residence, from February 16 – 20.
His Excellency Hisashi Owada was appointed in 2009, as the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, following his service as a judge for the ICJ since 2003. The ICJ is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
Before being appointed to this post, President Owada was professor of International Law and Organization at Waseda University in Japan, and President of the Japan Institute of International Affairs. He previously served as Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan, as well as Japan’s Permanent Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
President Owada taught at University of Tokyo for 25 years and for many years at Harvard, Columbia and New York University Law Schools. He is currently on the faculty of the New York University Global Law School and honorary professor at Leiden University in the Netherlands. President Owada is the author of numerous publications on international legal affairs and he is a member of l’Institut de Droit International.
Among his activities while he is in Hawai‘i, President Owada will be visiting law school classes, meeting with faculty and UH officials, addressing the Federal and Hawai‘i State Bar Associations, and will give a public address.
This year, the Law School extends its gratitude to the Hawai‘i Prince Hotel Waikīkī for providing exquisite lodgings for the President and his wife during their entire stay and co-sponsoring a welcome reception.
