Leeward Community College presents the 17th Annual International Festival, March 15-19, 2010, on the Pearl City campus.  The Festival, based on the theme of “Celebrating World Cultures,” is a weeklong event featuring workshops, demonstrations and presentations, and a culminating day of international cultural activities, food, and entertainment.

Weekday sessions include:
  • Indigenous People’s Rights in International Law
  • Capoeira Workshop & Demonstration
  • Building Cross-Cultural Bridges to (and in) Bolivia
  • Central African Dance Workshop
  • “It’s in Our Hands:” America’s Demography and the 2010 Census
  • Conversation Celebration, opportunities to converse in various foreign languages
  • Film Screening and Panel Discussion on two Hawaiian language films, “Stones” and Live Tonight”
All activities are scheduled in various venues on campus. A complete listing of all sessions follows.

The week’s activities culminate with International Festival Day on Saturday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the College’s Eucalyptus and Tuthill Courtyards.  The day features a variety of international foods, music, and dance, along with cultural demonstrations, displays and hands-on activities.

The continuous entertainment includes Gee Yun International Martial Arts, Capoeira Besouro, Sounds and Colors of Cordillera with BIBAK, Ukwanshin Kabudan Ryukyu Performing Arts Group, Traditional West African Music and Dance by Sewa Fare , Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar by Dennis and David Kamakahi, Traditional Balkan and Middle Eastern Music, Partners in Time with Sourren Baronian, and Malia and Belly Dancers in Paradise. A variety of international foods will be available. 

The International Festival is free and open to the public.  The event is sponsored Leeward Community College, the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, Census 2010, Preferred Home & Community Based Services, Inc., UNITE HERE Local 5, Pacific Telecard and Wireless, and Leeward CC Student Government.
