Shidler College of Business team places in Asia business plan competition

On March 11, a team of UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business students placed first runner-up in the 2010 Thammasat Asia Moot Corp in Bangkok, Thailand. The team, which was the only team from the United States, beat out many of Asia’s top universities from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore and Thailand. Four of 11 teams qualified for the final round of competition. The first place team is from the host school, Thammasat University.

 

The Shidler team is comprised of three business graduate students – Tiffany Chiang, Omar Sultan and Tarik Sultan. The team’s business plan is for a company called MB Therapeutics that focuses on developing and establishing the standard for noninvasive targeted drug / gene delivery to improve patient treatment and quality of life. The team received a trophy and $2,500 for their win. “I felt honored to represent the University of Hawai‘i in this competition. The endeavor was challenging and a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience,” says team leader Omar Sultan.

 

In preparation for the competition, the team was mentored by Shidler College of Business Entrepreneurship Chairholder John Butler; Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship Executive Director Susan Yamada; and members of Hawaii Angels. Butler says, “This team has an outstanding business idea and did a phenomenal job presenting their proposal.  Their second place finish is the highest ever for a Shidler College of Business team in one of the most competitive business plan competitions in the world.”
