Mililani High School senior Sabrina Lowe took home the grand-prize in the UH West O‘ahu Flyer Contest. During a surprise visit to her classroom by UH West O‘ahu staff, Lowe beamed as it was announced that her design would be featured in April issues of MidWeek and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and she was presented with a brand new Amazon Kindle. Lowe's flyer was chosen from a field of talented entries by fellow high school finalists:
  • Marc Jason Abundo, Kaua‘i High School
  • Caroline Foti, King Kekaulike High School
  • Alex Kawamoto, Mililani High School
  • Justine Rumbaua, Maui High School
“I looked at the past winners of this contest and tried to focus on what works and what will appeal to students today,” said Lowe. Upon hearing the news that her flyer was selected as the grand-prize winner, Lowe remarked, “I am so excited. I really didn’t know what to say. I really wanted to win, and I really can’t believe that I actually did it.”

More than 250 high school students from around the state of Hawai‘i entered UH West O‘ahu’s Flyer Contest for a chance to win an iPod video Nano, Amazon Kindle and an opportunity to get their work published in MidWeek and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Participants were asked to create a flyer that promotes UH West O‘ahu as a top choice for college-bound students. Each finalist received an iPod video Nano. The general public was invited to vote online for the grand-prize winning design.

“Sabrina’s flyer is a first-rate example of creativity and a concise message,” said Gene I. Awakuni, UH West O‘ahu chancellor. “With more than 250 entries in this year’s contest, the judging was difficult as so many of the students were able to convey the importance of higher education at UH West O‘ahu. Congratulations to Sabrina and all of this year’s finalists.”
