UH Campuses Remember September 11th

Memorial activities planned at all 10 campuses

Activities in remembrance of September 11th are planned throughout the University of Hawaiʻi system. Many are open to the general public.

Hawaiʻi Community College/UH Hilo

· Faculty, staff and students from both UH Hilo and Hawaiʻi Community College will gather for a moment of silence at 10:05 a.m., the time when the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Message boards will be posted from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for individuals to post messages. An open microphone will be available for students from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

· A formal program will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. with Hawaiʻi CC Provost Sandra Sakaguchi and Big Island Mayor Harry Kim speaking.

Honolulu Community College

· Faculty, staff, and students will gather at the campus mall at 10 a.m. for a moment of silence coordinated to take place during the same time as that at the State Capitol.

· Assistant Professor Michel Kaiser has put on display a series of posters on terrorism that were created last semester by beginning graphic design students. The posters are on display on the third floor of Building 2.

Kapiʻolani Community College

· Faculty, staff, and students will gather and join hands on the Great Lawn at 9:15 a.m., followed at 9:30 a.m. with a chant led by instructor Kawika Napoleon and his students.

Kauaʻi Community College

Community Program — 11 a.m. — Kauaʻi Community College Performing Arts Center

· The college is collaborating with the Office of the Mayor, the U.S. Navy Public Affairs, and the Office of Continuing Education & Training, on a program that will feature the presentation of colors by the U.S. Navy Color Guards from Pacific Missile Range Facility, remarks by Kauaʻi CC Provost Peggy Cha and Kauaʻi Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, and a prayer of remembrance with representatives from various faiths.

Leeward Community College

Remembrance Ceremony — 10 a.m. — Peace Garden fronting Leeward CC Library

· A remembrance ceremony and bell ringing will be held with words of blessing and peace recited from The Torah, The Koran, and The Bible by Phi Theta Kappa students. They will also dedicate a meditation bench that will be located under a shower tree near the peace pole.

Maui Community College

· People will have the opportunity to add two lines to the Peace Poem, a poem that has gone around the world (www.peacepoem.com), throughout the day. The poem will be read at a 7 p.m. Candlelight Memorial at the Student Lounge.

· A moment of silence and prayer will be held at noon at the flagpole. A brown bag non-denominational lunch discussion group will be held in front the student lounge at 12:30 p.m.

Windward Community College

· A moment of silence will be held as participants gather at the Peace Pole on campus.

UH West Oʻahu

· A moment of reflection will be held at noon on the campus lanai. The program will include singing and an opportunity for individuals to comment with their personal reflections.

UH Mānoa

· A moment of silence will be held at 10:06 a.m. to coincide with the state‘s commemoration.

Campus Center Activities:

· 9:30 a.m. — presentations by the Honolulu Fire and Police Departments in the Campus Center Forum.

· 10:30 a.m. — video presentations in the Campus Center Forum; open microphone in Campus Center Courtyard; writing scrolls on various walls in Campus Center for faculty, staff and students to express their feelings

· 11:30 a.m. — Panel presentation in Campus Center Ballroom presented by the Matsunaga Institute for Peace to recognize the victims as well as discuss the reaction and impact of 9/11 on Asia. Richard Dubanoski, dean of the College of Social Sciences, Barry Gills of the Globalization Research Center, and Brien Hallet of the Matsunaga Institute for Peace will facilitate a panel discussion of experts on the various Asian regions. The experts will discuss the impact of 9/11 on domestic, economic, and foreign policies of those regions.

Candlelight Vigils:

· A candlelight vigil and lecture in memory of the 9/11 disaster and how Hawaiʻi addressed its impact will be held at 5 p.m. at George Hall 344 (lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. in George Hall 213). The event is sponsored by the School of Travel Industry Management and will feature Tony Vericella, President and CEO of the Hawaiʻi Visitors and Convention Bureau as the guest lecturer. Vericella will speak on "Tourism Disaster Management: How Hawaiʻi Responded to the 9/11 Disaster."

· A candlelight vigil will be held in the Hale Aloha Special Dining Room from 7 to 10 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Office of Student Housing Services.
