Two interim deans have received two-year appointments at the UH Mānoa campus. The Board of Regents approved Sylvia Yuen’s appointment as interim dean and director for research and cooperative extension of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), effective July 16. Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw has approved the appointment of Noreen Mokuau as interim dean of the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work, effective August 1.

Yuen will oversee CTAHR, whose current dean, Andy Hashimoto, returned to his faculty position as of July 1. Yuen is the director of the University of Hawai‘i Center on the Family in CTAHR and has been associated with the Center since 1991. She also served as CTAHR’s associate dean for 10 years and as interim dean in 1996.

Mokuau will replace Jon Matsuoka, who is resigning to assume the position of president and CEO of the Consuelo Foundation next month. Mokuau started her academic career as an assistant professor in the Social of Social Work in 1983 and was promoted to full professor in 1994. She has also served as assistant dean, acting dean, and chair of both the BSW and PhD programs.

“Deans Yuen and Mokuau bring to their positions a wealth of expertise, experience and outstanding records of service to our community,” said Chancellor Hinshaw. “I’m confident they’ll provide strong leadership and direction for their units and for the campus during this transitional period.”

Added Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Reed Dasenbrock, “I am pleased to have Deans Yuen and Mokuau add to our leadership team their many years of experience in Hawai‘i as kama‘āina, as alumna, and as longtime faculty at Mānoa.”
