HONOLULU – University of Hawai‘i President M.R.C. Greenwood and Vice President for Academic Planning and Policy Linda Johnsrud issued the following statements today in response to Hawai‘i’s selection as a Round 2 finalist in the federal Race to the Top grant competition.

President M.R.C. Greenwood
“Hawai‘i being named one of the finalists in the second round of the federal Race to the Top grant competition is wonderful news and a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Department of Education, Board of Education, state administration and community partners who have worked to develop this strong plan for educational reform in Hawai‘i.

“As the sole system of public higher education in this state, the University of Hawai‘i will continue to provide its support and participation in Hawai‘i’s Race to the Top efforts as we move forward in this competition.

“UH has an important role and responsibility in preparing a highly educated citizenry for Hawai‘i, meeting the state’s needs for a well-developed workforce and fostering excellence in our research and innovation. The initiatives outlined in the State of Hawai‘i’s Race to the Top application will certainly aid in this effort.”

Vice President for Academic Planning and Policy Linda Johnsrud
“The University of Hawai‘i and the Department of Education have built a strong working relationship over the past five years. The success of their proposal affirms the direction they are moving and we look forward to our continued partnership.”
